I think your first tip is the best. Not just content, but original, unique content that is well written and of a high standard. Ultimately, its great content that will bring visitors to your blog. Of all the best blogs I know, none of them have used SEO or any other method to bring traffic, just great content. Craiglist and Gumtree both are good source of FREE adds. I posted adds for my website  every week and it works... But for traffic one should have good contents in website also. and pages are properly optimized for keywords. On page and off page both...

SEO is the best way to get tons of traffic! All other methods are too time consuming and they are no match of the traffic you get from search engines.
