I am the author of

and after every new post I go to ping.com and "ping" my new post to all these blog hosting services and search engine services. I do it every time I put new stuff up there, and yet I really have no idea what it does? I am beginning a class where I teach blogging to new bloggers and I want to know what I'm talking about when I tell people to 'ping'. Any advice?
