SPAM (#0)
Let's talk frankly about spam for a minute:

First of all, spam killed the old Blogger Forum. Getting rid of spam every day became so labor intensive that several moderators had to spend as much as an hour each every day just deleting it.

This software "learns" spam and has ways to intercept and quickly delete spam while banning IP and email addresses. still, we had around 6 spam posts just last night that had to be removed.

The other thing I am noticing is that new members are leaving short messages with several links in their signature lines. While we certainly want to encourage people to join, I wonder at what point a signature line just encourages spamming?

Comments?

Re: SPAM (#1)
Because of the number of people using the signature line for spamming, I have reduced the number of characters allowed in a signature to 100. That should be enough for a legitimate signature but not quite enough to put in URLs to spam sites.

"First of all, spam killed the old Blogger Forum"

is this why there are not many topics at the moment did something happen to the site. Just wanted to ask and check if it was my computer or if it was a new user thing...

Re: SPAM (#3)
There are several hundred thousand posts and topics that I have not moved over at this point.

I'm not sure whether I will.

The posts go back to 2003 and discuss topics like "Will Google buy Blogger" which is interesting from a historical perspective, but not very timely. There is also a good deal of spam which would have to be weeded out.

I will also be changing the forums around: dropping some, merging others, even adding one. I want <a href="http://www.bloggerblog.com> Blogger Blog</a> to more of a prominent deal here. That site gives bloggers an opportunity to learn blogging skills from some of the best blogs out there.

Re: SPAM (#6)
Thanks Eldrix.

It is much easier to keep spam under control here.

We will be adding features as we finish up some beta testing on a test site.

Good luck getting rid of spam.  I personally like the forums here and I hope they do not go away because of some mean mean peoples.

Yes. I can explain that you are a spammer. That your links in this post have been removed. That your 3 other identical posts which add nothing but spam have been removed. And, I can explain that you are now banned.

Re: SPAM (#12)
I think many people join different forums in order to get and share a lot of information about SEO. It is great to do some backlink building work at the same time. Few will work hard on sharing tips and opinion with others if they could not gain something that help building their own sites at the same time. Why bother???
Sure there will be spam, just like every coin has its two sides. However, it is not a good idea to kill spam by banning signature links.
Try to reduce this via introducing effective post moderating system, which will delete short comments which make no sense at all. I know that affiliateseeking.com and forums.seo.com are doing that. They've got very strict policy on this aspect. And people who often post meaningless comments will be banned for ever and ever more...
It might be helpful. Good luck getting rid of spam.

Re: SPAM (#13)
People are eager to get earn quick bucks. They try to spam so that more and link backs they can get to their site, This will improve their very small google ranking as well. What should be done -

AS AN ADMIN

1. Try to restrict url posting in signature for newbies
2. Restrict to just couple of urls in signature
3. Make more mods to clear and catch issues ASAP
4. Delay the process of joining this forum, it should not be instant

AS A MEMBER
1. Please respect this forum, we are all here to learn from others and also to get some visitors back to our site, that doest mean, we need to get to the business directly. If you keep littering this forum, this will no longer serve any of your goal
2. if you are posting any comment over others post just dont finish in one line and then start promoting your site. This is not good.
3. Be patient, you will get the money from your blog, you need not to be dreaming over night success.

Re: SPAM (#14)
I detest Spam-I also detest blogs that want me to visit that are pop-up ladden...

a lil bit of advice;be careful when clicking on others links I had one blog from here infect my pc with a virus and that kept me away for a few weeks...

as for siggys-I just today added a link to my blog in the sig area, I do think there should be a limit/certain number of posts before someone can even add a link-but thats just my 2cents
