Consider just googling different subjects...write down some ideas that pop out and then just "put the pencil to the paper."  Just get some things out of your head onto the paper and you will probably wind up with something great.

i am no genius but this seems really simple to me, just write about a subject - any subject did you audience respond to it? If yes then do it again and this time add some money links in the mix. If not then change the subject or the angle if your blog is strictly themed.

Never chase the money, your audience can sense a money grabber and they will turn and run.

It seems, I have a different approach altogether :(

I think the purpose of the blog matters. If you write for money, stick to a particular subject (unlike me). You will soon have a set of visitors who are interested in your topic.
For me, its more about expressing myself and learning the art of writing better. So I write whatever comes to me.... Just sticking to the theme of my blog - Tips and Tricks.

First Try to make a decision about a blog, for what to write on, then observe, that can u do it, if yeah, then do it, & advertising is the last thing. I mean to say that "content is king" of blog.

Try these steps:
1. What topic interests you or what do you intend to write in your blog?
2. You might not have something specific in mind but you'll certainly think of what to write in terms of KEYWORDS.
3. List down these keywords and try to type them in Google search engine or in Twitter, Squidoo, About.com, Blogger search box (or in any high traffic website)
4. You'll most likely find something interesting among those hits.
5. React, reflect, or think about the articles you read. Keep the information coming.
6. Try listing all the interesting stuffs you've read.
7. Now.. down to your blog's content... don't copy what you've read. Instead, find a new angle or find another subject related to it.

HOPE THAT HELPS.

If you're not starting with a topic that you're passionate about, you're probably doomed to fail. It's tough to look at the list of "profitable" topics and become passionate about one for the purpose of blogging.
